William Hill, the world’s biggest bookmaker that offers sports betting, poker games, online casino, bingo and Vegas games, recently announced that it is moving its telephone arm to Gibraltar. The bookmaker cited the UK’s unfair tax system as the reason for moving the telephone arm of its business.
William Hill boss Ralph Topping said that the tax regime in the UK is unfair and that new gambling exchanges such as Betfair enjoy a less-punishing tax regime. Topping said that moving the telephone arm of William Hill could be followed by the closing of the company’s betting shops.
“Do we have to close shops before others accept our UK business is under unfair pressure?” said Topping.
As part of the move a call centre in Leeds will be closed down and a call centre in Sheffield will be outsourced. Just to put things in perspective, this means that about 300 jobs will be outsourced. William Hill says that after the move the company will save £4 to £7 million in tax. Last year William Hill’s telephone arm lost £1.8 million.
